The first English people to arrive at the James River area of Virginia were in for hard times. 53 of the 197 colonists who sailed for Virginia from England in November, 1606 were alive 17 months after sailing. These were frightful odds. These first few were brave by definition, but they were braving the unknown and had no way of knowing what they were in for. Surely expeditions had sailed form England before and there were even French and Spanish colonies in the Indies and Central America. but it is unlikely
