And, while they are easy to understand, the American difference was not easily achieved.  It was shaped by unique circumstances.

  • the attitude of England's Parliament to colonial commerce, its regulation and taxation. It started as one thing and developed into another.
    • a few key acts of Parliament
  • the role of religion and religious freedom - there are a couple of interesting surprises here.
  • the generous reliance on local government allowed American colonies by the English - before 1760.
