America's Heritage

Understanding how American democracy developed requires knowing a few very interesting pieces of American history. We are taught that America was founded by people seeking religious freedom - well, yes and no. The United States of America is usually called a democracy. But there is a little more to it. America established a democratic, federal republic. Other's were more democratic. For example, France's subsequent revolution lead to a government that was closer to pure democracy. The differences are both interesting and compelling. And, while they are easy to understand, the American difference was not easily achieved. It was shaped by unique circumstances.
